Son of Neil. A sept of Mackay having descended from Neil MacNeill Mackay who was given the lands of Creich and Gairloch by King James I in 1430. John Neilson was granted the lands of Craigcaffie by Royal Charter some time after 1314. (3.5 ml NE of Stranraer). In 1429 Neil and Morgan Neilson were rewarded their brother Thomas' lands in Caithness when they helped capture him for the King, who duly executed him.
